Community meeting Wednesday
regarding naked soccer issue

President Torgerson will respond to the naked soccer task force report at a community meeting for all students, faculty and staff Wednesday, April 24, at 8 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life.

Support Staff meeting April 24

Luther College Support Staff will hold its meeting Wednesday, April 24, at 9 a.m. in Peace Dining Room. President Torgerson will conduct an open forum for staff. Also on the agenda will be Sue Luzum and Jean Gehling who will discuss information reported on each employee's pay stub. All new support staff employees who have joined Luther since October will be introduced as well.

Facilities Management Projects

The Box Office in the CFL is being renovated. The project will make the space four times larger than the current office and should be completed in early May.
Work is also under way to replace the chiller for the cooling system in Miller and Dieseth residence halls.

Jessa's family would like to thank everyone for the wonderful messages we received and all who supported us through visitation and celebration services in memory of Jessa. Jessa loved being a part of this community. We are very happy that she had the support of the Luther family these past three years. You are appreciated!

Math teams receive merit award

Luther's two teams at the 2002 Mathematical Contest in Modeling, consisting of Adam Syverson, Amit Palicha and Micah Oines, and Chris Anderson, Stefan Atev and Karl Martensson, were Meritorious Winners, putting them in the top 15 percent of the 650 registered teams from around the world. They outperformed all but one Midwest liberal arts college.

Comm/Ling senior paper presentations

Senior Communication/Linguistics majors will present their senior paper research April 28 in Olin 102. The presentations will be given in three sessions: 1 p.m., 2:25 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. The community is invited to attend.

KWLC lectures to air

Stephen Bloom's lecture "A Clash of Cultures in Heartland America" will air at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 27 on KWLC. The response from the Postville Community, "Harmony in Diversity" airs at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 4.

Women's Studies/Concerns events

Women's Studies and Women's Concerns announce several events this week. Today, Tuesday April 23, join in the celebration of women's "Words of One's Own," in Marty's 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday through Friday, view the clothesline project in the Union from 9 a.m. -3 p.m.

On Thursday April 25, a diaper drive will be held in front of the Union to benefit women with young children. Donations go to the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Resource Center, contact Kelly with questions, telephone 1886.

March in "Take Back the Night" Thursday evening, April 25. Marchers will begin on campus at the Bell Green at 6:30 p.m., walk to the courthouse by 7 p.m. and return to campus. Contact Char with any questions, telephone 1624.

Balalaika Ensemble raises $700

The LC Balalaika Ensemble, directed by Laurie Iudin-Nelson, performed a benefit concert at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Wis., April 14. The ensemble raised $700 for the Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy Food Sharing Ministry, an ELCA-supported ministry. This donation will provide approximately 1,200 meals for clients at the soup kitchens.

Three-on-three basketball tournament

Luther College will host the "Hoop-in' It Up for Humanity" three-on-three basketball tournament on Sunday, April 28, to raise funds for the Winneshiek County chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

The tournament is for both men's and women's teams. Age divisions are from sixth grade through college/adult. Starting time is 1 p.m.

Entry fee is $25 per team. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Winneshiek County chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

To register, contact Jenn Kruger at the Luther Regents Center, telephone 387-1575, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Teams can register until tournament tip-off time on April 28.

The tournament is organized and conducted by students of the Health 72 class.

OFS announcement

The Office for Financial Services is going "live" with Datatel, June 1. To help with the transition, OFS is asking for your help. Remember that supplies, materials, etc., must be ordered by May 1. This ensures that goods are received by May 31 to be expensed to the FY 2001-02 budget. All outstanding travel expense reports, purchase orders, purchase permits, invoices and account adjustments should be sent to OFS by May 31.
Also, a reminder that any charges made to a Luther College credit card after April 30 may not show up on the current FY 2001-02 budget since there is such a time lapse with credit card purchases. Thanks for your cooperation.

Biology Colloquium Series

On Thursday, April 25 at 8 p.m. in Valders 168, Chris Kjonaas, 2000 Luther grad and 2000-2001 Fulbright Scholar in Venezuela, will present a talk titled "Redefining a bird-flower mutualism: avian nectar robbing in the Venezuelan Andes." All members of the Luther community with an interest in living systems are invited to attend.

Gallery reception for Larson

A gallery reception for "The Artists' Gaze: The Portrayal of Women in 20th Century Art" will be held in Hovde Lounge Tuesday, April 23 at 12:30 p.m. "The Artists's Gaze" is a senior honors project curated by Katy Rose Larson. The exhibition, on display in Preus Library through May 26, uses works from the Luther College Fine Arts Collection.

Haller lecture April 28

Sharon Haller will present "An Air Force woman's 12 year journey towards peace" at 2 p.m. April 28 at the CFL recital hall and at 1:30 p.m. April 29 in Olin 102, All are welcome to attend. Conversation will follow the presentation, including a brief section of the PBS special on the Gulf War. Haller was a noncombatant in Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Her address is her story of going to war and the journey to become a peace advocate. She is an active member in Veterans For Peace, Friends Peace and Social Actions Committee and Peace Education (FNVW), Every Church a Peace Church Workshops, Women Against Military Action, Amnesty International and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Vocal ensembles perform April 28

Three Luther College vocal ensembles -- Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale and Nordic Choir - will perform in concert Tuesday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. I the CFL. The performances are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Articles, creations, honors, etc.

Jennifer Cantine, Mark Johns and Kim Powell attended the third annual Conference on White Privilege: "Understanding, Respecting, Connecting," held at Central College in Pella, Iowa April 18-19.
Lawrence Williams presented for the Brown Bag lecture session, at the African American Museum and Cultural Center, April 11 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The paper presented was titled, "M.L. King's Christian Love vs. the Protest of Ordinary People."
Caroline Banks attended the eighth annual Human Sciences Conference, "Understanding Subjectivity in Culture: Psychoanalysis/Ethnography/Cultural Studies," April 11-14 in Washington, D.C. She presented a paper titled, "From Guilt to Method in the Anthropology of Self-Starvation." In addition, her poem, "There is No Fat in Heaven," will appear in a forthcoming issue of Gastronomica, The Journal of Food and Culture published by the University of California Press.
Oyvind T. Gulliksen gave a lecture on "Ethnic Mourning: Reading Norwegian-American Tombstones" at Minnesota State University, Mankato, April 11. His essay, "Beret's Terrible Test: Giants in the Earth in Contemporary American Scholarship," has just appeared in American Studies at the Millennium, University of Turku, Finland. His essay on Waldemar Ager and Assimilation was published in Norwegian-American Essays 2001.
Daniel Womeldorf, Dining Service, will have a poem titled "Conjure" featured in an anthology "Letters from the Soul" due out this summer. This poem will also be one of 33 poems featured on a spoken word album, "The Sound of Poetry," due this May.
Joyce Becker was elected vice-president of the Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Her two-year term begins with the executive board meetings in June. Becker and Catherine Miller (UNI) are co-authors and winners of a grant of $1,000 to form a coalition of secondary mathematics educators from all accredited teacher education universities and colleges in Iowa to better define state requirements for content endorsement in mathematics.
Sandra Peter was a clinician for the Lake Conference Concert Choir Festival in Rosemount, Minn., April 18. She worked with top choirs from Apple Valley, Eagan, Rosemount, Eden Prairie, Burnsville, Chaska, Lakeville and Eastview High Schools.
William Kuhlman presented a workshop for the Northern Iowa Chapter of the American Guild of Organists on "Organ Nomenclature and the Art of Registration," Sunday April 21, in the CFL.

'Four-hour, 100-mile' rock layer trip

Open to all Faculty and Staff. The "Four-hour, 100-mile" trip through the rock layers of Winneshiek and Allamakee Counties will be led by geology curator Jean Young either Sunday April 28, or Sunday May 5, 1-5 p.m. One college van will be taken, with a limit of 12 people. Wellness challenge: Walk America

Luther Wellness team is trying to get a large team together for the Walk America for March of Dimes on Saturday, April 27. We are hoping to beat Upper Iowa in a challenge to have the most walkers and contributions. Help us in the work to prevent premature babies. Free blood pressure screenings

Luther faculty and staff can have a free blood pressure check at two blood pressure screenings, April 24, 2-4 p.m., and April 26, 8-10 a.m. in the Borlaug Room, Centennial Union. The screenings are sponsored by Luther Health Services and the Nursing 73 class.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure or kidney failure. One in four U.S. adults has high blood pressure, but because there are no symptoms nearly one-third of these people are unaware they have it. This is why high blood pressure is called the "silent killer."

Come to the blood pressure screenings and get the facts on high blood pressure. Find out how you can reduce your risks for heart attack and stroke with proper monitoring by a physician and simple lifestyle changes.

Position opening

Instructor of music: The position is not tenure-eligible, but contracts may be renewed annually for a maximum of six years. Qualifications include: minimum of master's degree, ABD preferred and experience in opera desirable. The successful candidate would be required to teach applied voice students and participate in the direction of the opera/opera scenes program. Applications are being solicited from the widest range of potential candidates. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Review of applications begin May 28 and continues until the position is filled. Third Culture Kid meeting

Northeast Iowa's first-ever meeting of TCK's/global nomads will be held in Decorah on Sunday, April 28. If you have grown up with different experiences from people who have lived primarily in only one culture, you are what author David C. Pollock calls "a Third Culture Kid." Come see that TCK's "are not new or few" at 510 W. Main, 3-4:30 p.m.

Sports results

The baseball team split a doubleheader with Cornell, losing the first game, 6-9, and defeating Cornell, 3-1,in the second game, April 20.

The softball team split a doubleheader with Wartburg, defeating the Knights 4-0 in the first game and losing, 4-5, in the second game, April 20.

The men's track and field team finished eighth of 10 teams at the Meet of Champions hosted by Augustana-Rock Island, April 20.

The women's track and field team finished fourth of 13 teams at the Augustana Women's Invite hosted by Augustana-Rock Island. Lynn Dalhed won the shotput with a toss of 43-0 1/2.

The men's golf team is in third place after the first 36-holes of the Iowa Conference Championships. Jordan Ryan is the individual leader with a two-day total of (75-70-145).

The men's tennis team defeated Upper Iowa, 7-0, and Loras, 7-0, April 20.

Home events this week:
The baseball team will host St. Olaf in a double header, April 24, 2 p.m.

The softball team will host Central, April 24, 3 p.m. and Cornell, April 27, 2 p.m.

The women's tennis team will host the Luther Invite, April 26. The meet will last all day.

The men's golf team hosts the Luther Invitational, April 26-27.

Music Friends' spring concert

The public is invited to Music Friends' Spring Concert Sunday, May 5, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Concert time is 3 p.m.
Music Friends is a Northeast Iowa Area Youth Chorus. Current members number 36 voices representing Cresco, Decorah, Ossian and Ridgeway communities. The concert will feature sacred, secular, folk songs and patriotic favorites. Special soloists and ensembles will also be highlighted.
