Celebration Iowa performance June 26

Celebration Iowa will present their dress rehearsal performance Thursday, June 26 at 5 p.m., in the parking lot of Storre Theater. The performance will open with Broadway tunes, continue with a revue of "Oliver," and conclude with pop hits from the 1960s to today. The Celebration Iowa jazz band will present charts throughout the performance. There is no charge for admission. Bring your blanket or lawn chair and get ready to enjoy an exciting performance by some of Iowa's most talented high school musicians.

June/July Centennial Union Purchases

Dining Services is implementing a new point-of-sale and card access system this summer. The old card system will not be used after July 14. Charges made by students, staff, faculty and dependents for purchases made in Oneota, Marty's, Catering, and the Book Shop, will not be processed for payment until after the new system has been installed. Consequently, the payroll deduction in August for Union charges will include both June purchases and July purchases.

Ellen's Computer Tip of the Week

Back by popular demand: How to use Bcc in e-mail to win friends. There are several reasons for using Eudora or WebMail's "Bcc:" or blind carbon copy, feature. Enter all addresses on the "Bcc" line when you send a mass e-mail, and recipients will not have to scroll through the names of all the other recipients before they reach your message. Some recipients may not appreciate having their e-mail address widely disseminated to people they don't know. The size of the message will be smaller and save space on email servers and individuals' "In" boxes. You may address a message to yourself and put all the other recipients' addresses on the "To:" line.

Updated paper color books at Print Shop

Please send your paper book in to the Print Shop so we can update the available colors. Please be sure and put your department on the book so we know who to return it to. Thank you for your help with this project.
If your department does not have a paper book and would like one call Rhonda, telephone 387-1013. She will get one out to you right away.

Scandinavian Institute and bicycles

The Scandinavian Institute would like to have a number of bicycles for use by this year's group of 34 teachers coming from Scandinavia. OFF CAMPUS EVENTS
'Exploring Our American Diversity'

The Decorah Diversity Appreciation Team and the Decorah Public Library are sponsoring a July reading program titled "Exploring Our American Diversity." The program will discuss three books, one every other week, around topics that represent the diversity of American experience. Discussion will explore questions such as Who are we as Americans?, How does one become American?, Must one give up parts of one's culture, heritage and ethnicity to become American? Is the process of assimilation the same for all?

Participants may choose to read and discuss one, two, or all three books. Discussions will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m., in the public meeting room of the Decorah Public Library. Registration is due by June 27, and can be done at the Decorah Public Library, 202 Winnebago Street or by calling 563-382-3717. Books will be purchased through Bookends and Beans with a discounted price for participants, who will pay for and get to keep their own books. The books and schedule are:

July 2: Paule Marshall's "Praisesong for the Widow," 256 pages, $11.09. Discussion leader for this book is Novian Whitsitt. In "Praisesong," recently widowed Avey Johnson, a wealthy, middle-aged African-American woman, undergoes a spiritual rebirth and finds a vital connection to her past while visiting an island in the Caribbean. Novelist Marshall portrays the special anguish of certain African-Americans who, in their drive to achieve material success, have lost touch with their heritage.

July 16: Kent Nerburn's, "Neither Wolf Nor Dog," 304 pages, $15. Discussion leader for this book is Harv Klevar. This 1996 Minnesota Book Award winner draws the reader deep into the world of an Indian elder known only as Dan. It's a world of Indian towns, white roadside cafes and abandoned roads that swirl with the memories of the Ghost Dance and Sitting Bull. Threading through the book is the story of two men struggling to find a common voice. "Neither Wolf nor Dog" takes readers to the heart of the Native American experience.

July 30: O.E. Rolvaag, "Giants in the Earth," 531 pages, $11.13. Discussion leader for "Giants" is Peter Scholl. Giants in the Earth is a book that suggests the wealth of human potential brought to America year after year by the peasant immigrants who passed through Ellis Island and scattered the length and breadth of the land. Translated from Norwegian, and stemming from a rich old-world literary tradition, it is at the same time deeply and vitally American.

For more information or to register, contact the Decorah Public Library, telephone 382-3717, or e-mail tgertz@decorah.lib.ia.us.
