Service of dedication

The Luther community is invited to this year’s dedication service Thursday, Aug. 23. President Torgerson will deliver his State of the College address and new faculty and staff will be introduced. The event begins at 5 p.m. with hearty hors d’hoeuvers served under the Center for Faith and Life canopy. The college hopes the earlier start time will allow more people to attend. Invitations will come to home addresses soon.

EVENTS
Eckheart show displayed through Aug. 15

An exhibit of Douglas Eckheart’s artwork in the upper level of the CFL. The show is titled “RE-ENCOUNTER: Selections from Recent Works.” Eckheart’s show is free and open to the public.

Fall convocation address Aug. 30

Melba Pattillo Beals, author of the acclaimed book “Warriors Don’t Cry: A Searing Memoir of Battle to Integrate Little Rock,” will present Luther’s fall convocation address Thursday, Aug. 30, 9:40 a.m., CFL.

“Warriors Don’t Cry” is the college’s required reading for first-year students for the 2007-08 academic year, which opens with the convocation ceremony and lecture. The program is free and open to the public.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Jim Langholz and a group of five students: Katy Fiedler, Chelsea Koenigs, Emily Jacob, Joel Martin and Godson Sowah, completed a “Soccer for Peace” project in Accra, Ghana, July 6-23. This project was one of “100 Projects for Peace” funded by Kathryn Wasserman Davis through the United World College Foundation. The generous donations of soccer equipment and financial support from the Luther community were greatly appreciated by the Luther group and by the Ghanian students involved with the workshops and soccer tournament. Wanda Deifelt’s article, “Intercultural ethics: sameness and otherness revisited” appears in the last issue of the Dialog: a Journal of Theology (Volume 46, No. 2, Summer 2007, p. 112-119).

Flater awarded $160,000 grant

Erin Flater, physics, has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to support a Luther-St. Olaf College collaborative research project in nanotribology, the study of the effects of friction on devices and matter smaller than one micrometer. The $158,983 NSF grant will be used to acquire a state-of-the-art friction measurement system, an atomic force microscope.

OFF CAMPUS EVENTS
Hurricane Katrina presentation Aug. 9

As the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaches, Decorah native Rob Sand will speak about his experiences and perspectives as a volunteer helping to rebuild New Orleans Thursday, Aug. 9, 6 p.m. at the Decorah Public Library. The free event will take place in the library’s second floor Mezzanine Gallery.

Program attendees will hear about continuing difficulties in New Orleans, as well as positive changes being made and heartwarming stories about diverse volunteers and New Orleans residents coming together.

Community blood drive Aug. 10

The American Red Cross is holding a Decorah community blood drive, Friday, Aug. 10, noon to 6 p.m., at the Army Reserve Center. For an appointment, call Carol, telephone 382-3972, or just show up. Sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary #163. 

Toddle Time, Story Time break

Toddle Time and Story Time at the Decorah Public Library will take a break Aug. 13-Sept. 4.

Toddle Time, for ages 0-3 years, is presented Mondays from 10:30-10:50 a.m. throughout the year. Children can enjoy stories, songs, puppets, and movement activities.

Story Time is presented Tuesdays or Wednesdays, 10:30-11:15 a.m. throughout the year for children 3-5 years of age. Children are invited to enjoy stories, songs, a puppet show, movement activities, and create a work of art. Parents or caregivers are encouraged to stay.

Beginners Chi Gung class Aug. 15

Decorah Public Library is offering a free Introductory Chi Gung class Wednesday, Aug. 15, 6:30 p.m. in the lower level meeting room. The class is designed for Chi Gung beginners. Contact the library, 382-3717, to register: maximum class size is 20.

Chi Gung instructor Ejay Green of Clermont will share basic knowledge about what Chi Gung is and what benefits it holds for those who practice it.

According to Green, “Chi Gung was practiced in ancient China as a way to maintain health.”

Toys Go ‘Round looking for student help

Toys Go ‘Round Toy Lending Library is looking for student help Thursdays, 3-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., during the school year. Prefer work-study but will consider others. Job includes assisting with maintenance of toys as well as assisting with checking toys in and out. Toys Go ‘Round is a non-profit agency located in the lower level of the Decorah Public Library with an inventory of over 1,500 toys. Membership is open to anyone in the Winneshiek County area. Contact Kathy Barloon, 382-9037, for more information.

Old fashioned potluck/volunteer awards

An annual Old Fashioned potluck picnic and awards program will be held on the Montauk grounds on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 5 p.m. Volunteers will be recognized for all the time and expertise they have contributed to Montauk and the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Bring a dish to pass, table service and lawn chairs. Coffee and lemonade provided. In case of rain the picnic will move to the Clermont Park shelter. For further information please contact Montauk at (563) 423-7173.
