ANNOUNCEMENTS
October staff meeting

At this month’s staff meeting, President Torgerson will discuss the strategic planning document staff received last week. Staff are asked to attend one of two sessions and bring their copy of the document. Meetings are held in Peace Dining Room Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. or Thursday, Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS
College Council Executive Summary

College Council has held two meetings this fall, Sept. 14 and Oct. 5. Discussion topics included: Chinese language teaching in 2008-09, recap 2006-2007 budget reductions/reallocations, an update on faculty feedback from strategic planning meetings and a recap of the 2006-2007 budget performance and audit. College Council will begin developing the 2008-09 budget in October.

Faculty reminder: Book Shop returns

Reminder to faculty: The Book Shop will begin textbook returns this week. Remind students to purchase any textbooks they may need for this term. Thank you.

Human Resources update

http://my.luther.edu now provides staff with current vacation, sick leave, and personal day information. Log in with username and NorseKey. Select Employee’s Menu, then Leave Plan Summary. Non-Exempt staff will see current vacation, sick leave, and personal day information. Exempt staff will see current vacation day information. Personal Day information will appear in the near future. Blood screenings available

The Health Service will offer blood screenings for employees and spouses. The cost is $32 for the blood analysis and an additional $40 for the PSA. Call Health Service, 387-1045, to schedule an appointment. Testing dates are Oct. 9, 11, 18 and 23.

The 2007 Midwest Group Benefits reimbursement rate is 80 percent after deductible has been met.

Upcoming Concert Band Tour

The Concert Band Tour of the Great Lakes States will depart Saturday, Oct. 20 and return Saturday, Oct. 27. Students will be back in class Monday, Oct. 29 and will communicate individually with professors regarding missed assignments. Asian Film Series

The Asian Film Series, co-sponsored by WGST program and the courses in Asian area studies, present “King of the Masks” from director Tianming Wu Thursday, Oct. 18 at 9 p.m. in Olin 102. Desperate for his art to survive, the King of Masks finds an apprentice. When the apprentice reveals a secret, their relationship is tested by the old man’s sense of tradition and the established gender constructions of China in the early 20th century.

German Film Series Oct. 10

Luther’s German Program invites all to the German Film Series Wednesday, Oct. 10 with “Die bleierne Zeit” shown at 7 p.m. in Hovde Lounge. Set in Germany in the 1970s, two sisters, both committed to women’s civil rights, fight for the same cause in very different ways. Juliane grows up to be a reporter for a women’s magazine, while Marianne becomes a leader of a terrorist organization. In German with English subtitles.

‘The Final Season’ opens Oct. 12

Author of ‘Midnight Assassin’ on campus

Tom Wolf will talk about “Midnight Assassin,” the book he co-wrote with his wife, Patricia Bryan, at Luther College on Sunday, Oct. 14, 7:30 p.m. in Olin 102.

Sense of Vocation Program welcomes Purvi Shah and Sejal Shah. Homecoming events feature DHS band

Decorah High School marching band will be a featured performer at Luther’s Homecoming. The band will march in the parade Saturday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m., then be featured during the 1 p.m. football game. The Drumline, under the direction of Jerry Dean, will perform a short feature between the first and second quarters. The entire band will perform their 2007 field show “A Musical Collision of Celts and Norsk” at halftime. 24-hour comic book-making event

The Decorah cell of the Cartoonist Conspiracy is joining with the Luther College Sequential Art Club in putting on a marathon comic book making event. The LC24HR Comic Event will take place from 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 to 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 in CFA Room 119. The goal for each participant is to make a 24-page comic book in 24 hours. Participation is open to anyone who is interested in attempting the challenge. Participants should bring their own materials. The event is free and open to the public.

Rinco to give Ylvisaker lecture Oct. 16

Olga Rinco will present the Ylvisaker grant lecture “Supramolecular Photochemistry: Applications to Light Activated Drug Therapy,” Tuesday, Oct. 16, 6:30 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. Refreshments will be served before the talk, beginning at 5:50 p.m.

CSS: The Passing Zone

The Passing Zone, featuring Owen Morse and alumnus Jon Wee, will perform Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL.

Take two guys with chainsaws, put them in tights, throw in a Garden Weasel ®, tell them to juggle 100 random objects on stage, and you get The Passing Zone.

Reformation lecturer on campus Oct. 28

Guido Marnef, professor of history at Universiteit Antwerpen, Belgium and acclaimed writer, will lecture Sunday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m. in Olin Room 102. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The lecture, “Building a Lutheran Community: The Case of 16th Century Antwerp,” explores the immediate impact Martin Luther had in the city of Antwerp following the Protestant Reformation.

Fall Fling Oct. 27

Fall Fling is almost here. Students will be heading out into Decorah Saturday, Oct. 27 to help with fall chores. To request student help call College Ministries at 387-1271. Priority will be given to the elderly and handicapped, though all may participate. All donations will be given to the United Way in Olmsted County to aid in the flood relief and rebuilding efforts and to the Mashiah Foundation, an AIDS ministry, in Jos, Nigeria.

TIAA-CREF counseling/presentations

Lutheran Festival of Writing

Are you an avid reader or writer? Luther will host over 20 award-winning authors who have been shaped the Lutheran tradition as part of “Called to Create: A Lutheran Festival of Writing” Nov. 2-4. Come for panels, readings and presentations. Registration for faculty and staff is $40, $70 to also attend the Saturday evening banquet. Registration for students is free. Academic technology librarian: Tenure-eligible, 10-month position at rank of assistant professor. Member of library department as well as collaborative worker with user services team. Position begins no later than August 2008. Welcome new staff

Please welcome Luther alumnus Caleb Mattison ’07, as a Luther staff person. Caleb began Sept. 26 as the Campus Sustainability Intern. He will be here until September 2008. His office is Ockham House 105.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Char Kunkel, sociology, Donna Kubesh, nursing, and Jyoti Grewal, assistant dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Zayed University, Dubai and former associate professor of history at Luther, presented at the conference “The Merry Widow: Rethinking Widowhood in History, Culture and Society” sponsored by the Center for Research into Gender in Culture and Society at the University of Wales, Swansea July 7-9. Their panel was titled “The Making of the Widow” and individual papers addressed the meaning of Sikh widows in the aftermath of 1984 India by Grewal, the experience of widowhood amongst WWII survivors by Kubesh, and the construction of widowhood in the African American community of the 20th century by Kunkel. 

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Volleyball played in the Augustana Volleyball Invitational Oct. 5-6. The Norse lost to North Central, 1-3 and Augustana, 2-3, and defeated Kalamazoo, 3-0, and Grinnell, 3-0. Grayce Hamilin ’10, Luther libero, was named to the all-tournament team.

Football defeated Loras Oct. 6, 16-6.

Men’s soccer defeated Coe Oct. 6, 9-0.

Women’s soccer defeated Coe, 2-1.

Women’s golf placed third at IIAC Championships Sept. 28-29, Oct. 5-6. All-Conference performers were Emily Looft ’10, fifth, and Lindsay Thies ’09, seventh.

Men’s golf were champions of the Benedictine University Invitational Oct. 6-7. Paul Soener ’09, and Tom Lantzy ’09, were co-medalists with a two-round total of 140.

‘Davis Projects for Peace’

Luther has been invited to participate in a unique program called the “Davis Projects for Peace.” Luther students, working alone or in groups, interested in designing and implementing their own grassroots projects for peace are encouraged to submit proposals of three pages or less by Jan. 15. If selected, students receive $10,000 to implement projects somewhere in the world during summer 2008.

United Way winners

Congratulations to the second set of United Way winners. Mona Nelson won 20 sessions with a personal trainer and Pamela Cook received a gift card from the Book Shop. Thank you to all who took the time to make an investment in our community through United Way.

United Way update

OFF CAMPUS EVENTS
Bryan Owen poetry reading Oct. 9

Decorah Public Library will host British poet Bryan Owen on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 6:30 p.m. in the second floor Mezzanine Gallery. Friends of DPL are funding the poetry reading; open to the public free of charge.

Owen is currently touring both the UK and the US to promote Blue daffodils and other poems (2007) and the forthcoming Kokopelli’s dance: the American connection (due to be published in 2008).

Theatre/dance dept. benefit performance

Theatre/dance will hold a benefit performance of “The Boy Who Fell Into A Book” Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in Jewel Theatre. A free will offering will be taken to benefit the Friends of Decorah Public Library Endowment Fund. An anonymous donor will match up to $5,000 for money donated to the Endowment Fund.

The community is asked to pick up tickets prior to the event at the check out desk at DPL.

Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church Capon Supper is Wednesday, Oct. 10. Serving begins at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $9 for 12 and over; 11 and under $4, preschool free. Alfheim book discussion group Oct. 11

Join the Alfheim book discussion group Thursday Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. to discuss World Fantasy Award-winning author Patricia McKillip’s 2006 title “Solstice Wood.” The discussion will take place in the public meeting room located in the lower level of DPL.

“Solstice Wood” follows Sylvia Lynn, who has spent most of her adult life avoiding her past and the grandmother who raised her. She is confronted with the past and learns of witches, ancient powers and more.

Greig, Grøndahl og Grøt concert Oct. 11

“Greig, Grøndahl og Grøt,” a concert to be presented at First Lutheran Church, will be held Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. This unusual title refers to composers Edvard Grieg and Agathe Backer Grøndahl, along with rømmegrøt, a Norwegian delicacy. A free-will offering will be taken in lieu of an admission fee.

Songs by both composers will be performed by Elisabeth Tandberg, visiting soprano from Oslo, Norway, and David Judisch, local baritone and Luther professor. At the piano will be Jessica Paul, a collaborative pianist and Luther vocal coach.

Band Boosters chili supper Oct. 12

The Decorah Band Boosters will serve their annual chili supper Friday, Oct. 12, 4:30-7 p.m. in the High School cafeteria, prior to the Decorah vs. Charles City football game. Tickets are $5 for adults and students K-12; preschoolers free.

Cemetery Walk Oct. 14

Upstart Crow Theatreworks will present a Cemetery Walk Sunday, Oct. 14, 2-4 p.m. in Decorah's Phelps Cemetery. Costumed performers of all ages will be located at stations throughout the cemetery, bringing to life a wide variety of characters from Decorah's past. Performers include Luther faculty David Faldet, Nancy Barry and Richard Simon Hanson. Tickets are available at the gate: $5/adults, $3/students or $12/family. For more information call 387-3824.

Decorah Reads! program seeks volunteers

The Decorah Reads! program seeks 11 adult volunteers for the second session of the 2007-2008 school year.

‘Self preservation for women’ class

Northeast Iowa Community College is offering a self-defense class “Self Preservation for Women”, Saturday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m.-noon. Held in the multi purpose room between Carrie Lee Elementary and the Decorah Middle School, this class will teach women to take care of themselves in today’s fast paced society. Education, environmental considerations, attitude and posture all factor into each potential at-risk situation. Role-playing is an important part of this class, so be sure to wear comfortable, loose clothing, no shorts or tank tops.

DPL after school program Oct. 16

Decorah Public Library will host “How Do Animals Get Ready for Winter?” with Lake Meyer naturalist Larry Reis Tuesday, Oct. 16, 3:30-4:15 p.m. He will talk about hibernating animals and show several furs.

Norman Borlaug Homecoming Banquet

Norman Borlaug will be guest of honor at a banquet at The Mint in Protivin, Iowa Tuesday, Oct. 16. Hosted by the Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation, the prime rib dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., there will be a tour of Borlaug’s boyhood farm near Protivin. Keynote address will be given by Borlaug, followed by a presentation by members of the Sasakawa Global 2007 African Staff Delegation.

If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell.
