The University of Iowa's Equal Justice Foundation (EJF) and the Iowa Campaign for Human Rights (ICHR) collaborated to create Iowa Law: Project Katrina, a volunteer effort of the law students who contributed basic legal services and manual labor to victims of the September flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina. “It was amazing and I am lucky to have been able to help people” said Knapp. “Iowa Law: Project Katrina is much more than an effort to provide practical results at a pivotal moment in the rebuilding of New Orleans. It is an extension of the good will of the University of Iowa student body as well as the people of the State of Iowa,” she said. The student activities were coordinated through the Student Hurricane Network, which formed in New Orleans to address legal issues caused by Hurricane Katrina. Legal issues requiring assistance in the aftermath of the flooding include: applying for FEMA food and housing assistance, applying for unemployment services, and general assistance with finances complicated by new bankruptcy rules. The University of Iowa students were featured for their contribution to the rebuilding of New Orleans on the ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) website. Iowa Law: Project Katrina is sponsored in part by several donors, including The University of Iowa Provost’s Office, University President Skorton’s office, Dean Carolyn Jones of the College of Law, University of Iowa Student Government, law professors, student travelers, friends and parents. |
