Eric Cutler to receive Luther College Young Alumni Award

Eric Cutler, Metropolitan Opera tenor called one of the most promising singers of his generation, will receive the Luther College Young Alumni Award on Sunday, May 18 during the college’s 2008 commencement ceremonies.
A native of Adel, Iowa, Cutler received the bachelor of arts degree in music from Luther in 1999.
The Young Alumni Award recognizes Luther alumni who have graduated in the past 10 years and who have rendered notable service to their profession and society in their vocation or avocation. The award honors professional achievement, leadership abilities and distinctive service to Luther or society. It also recognizes commitment, leadership, character and ethic that exemplify the college mission.
Critically praised as one of the most outstanding young opera and oratorio singers, Cutler has attracted the attention of the world’s major opera houses as well as gaining a notable following in both orchestral and recital repertoire.
Cutler was a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1998. An alumnus of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, his career has been studded with awards, grants and achievements. Most recently, he is the winner of the 2005 Richard Tucker Award.
EMI issued Eric Cutler's first solo recording in 2003, a program with pianist Bradley Moore featuring music of Barber, Schumann, Hahn and Liszt. This disc was awarded the Record of the Month distinction from Opera News.
Cutler is also the winner of the 2002 ARIA award and a 2001 Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center. In 2000, he received a Sara Tucker Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, followed by a Tucker Career Grant for 2001. He was a 1999 winner of the Houston Grand Opera Studio's Eleanor McCallum Auditions.
Cutler is spending the 2007 and 2008 season performing at renowned theatres in the United States and abroad. He continues his role as Tamino in “The Magic Flute” at the Metropolitan Opera and at the Houston Grand Opera.
In addition to performances at Opera Australia and De Vlaamse Opera in Belgium, Cutler returned to Luther in October to perform a recital.
Cutler has appeared in productions at the Royal Opera Convent Garden, Teatro Real Madrid, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Opera Pacific, Opera Colorado, Santa Fe Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Pittsburgh Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Vancouver Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the Wolf Trap Opera Company.
He has performed in concert with the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony and the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor. He has also appeared at the Kennedy Center and with the Met Chamber Ensemble at Weill Recital Hall.
