Prints and drawings from the Hokes Archives on display in Luther College Preus Library April 2- May18
“Medical Arts,” the latest traveling exhibition curated by Beauvais Lyons, art professor at the University of Tennessee and director of the Hokes Archives, will be displayed April 2- May 18 in Preus Library on the campus of Luther College.
The exhibit features a collection of medical and anatomical prints and drawings from the Hokes Archives. Although the series of elaborate prints and drawings appears to be authentic depictions of abnormal human anatomy, they are in fact works of fiction that comment on science and the representation of the body.
The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The prints in the collection are an outgrowth of Lyons’ interest in the history and visual conventions of scientific illustration.
Lyons’ one-person exhibitions have been presented at institutions including Vanderbilt University, Carnegie Mellon University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Nowy Oficia Gallery, Gdansk, Poland.
Lyons has written several articles which have appeared in publications including Contemporary Impressions, Printmaking Today, Art Journal, Archaeology and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
His prints are in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
He has been active with the Southern Graphics Council, serving as president and editor of Graphic Impressions.
Lyons received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach at the Fine Arts Academy in Poznañ, Poland and served as the chair of the IMPACT 4 Conference held in Berlin and Poznañ.
