Exhibit of maps by Larry Stark at Luther College Center for Faith and Life
“You CAN Get There from Here,” an exhibit featuring map images by conceptual artist and printmaker Larry Stark, will be displayed April 1- May 18 in Luther College’s Center for Faith and Life.
The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Stark’s exhibit at Luther is a collection of maps that were originally created to show people how to get from one location to another. Stark started saving these maps in the 1970s with the intent of someday creating a book or exhibit. Since, he has asked many more people to contribute by creating new maps or offering existing ones. The exhibit is a compilation of map images for directions and those created as art, both sophisticated and simple.
Stark has been an artist for over 40 years. Seventy public institutions have purchased his work, including The Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian Institution, The National Gallery of Canada, The Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and The Detroit Institute of Art. He has also held personal exhibitions at more than 50 public institutions, and has held exhibits at many commercial art galleries.
Stark’s original interest was silk screening photographs on paper or canvas, but he has since moved to creating photographic ink jet prints and turning the mundane and unexpected into art projects. His work reflects the conceptual art movement’s ideal that the concept underlying a piece of art is of more value than the product.
