Woodmen Vice President Schreier to receive Luther College’s Jacobson-Rugland Award

Mark L. Schreier, executive vice president, finance and treasurer of Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, has been named the recipient of the 16th annual Luther College Jacobson-Rugland Award.
Schreier will receive the award at the Sept. 5 “Celebration of Fraternalism” lunch during the 122nd annual conference of the National Fraternal Congress of America, Sept. 4-6 at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.
Established by Luther College in 1993 and presented annually by the NFCA Actuarial Section, the award honors an outstanding fraternal actuary for contributions to the actuarial profession and for support of the fraternal benefit system.
The award is named in honor of Reuben Jacobson and Walter L. Rugland, graduates of Luther College who distinguished themselves as actuaries and leaders in the fraternal benefit industry. Luther bestows the service and achievement award on professionals in the field of actuarial science and fraternal benefit organizations who reflect the philosophy, commitment and professionalism of Jacobson and Rugland.
A committee of the National Fraternal Congress of America chooses the recipient. Nominations come from actuaries and fraternal organizations across the country.
Based in Omaha, Neb., Woodmen of the World is a financial services and products organization that strives to benefit its members through every stage of life by providing valued financial solutions, engaging members in volunteer community service and enriching the lives of members.
A native of Verdigre, Neb., Schreier began his Woodmen of the World career in 1977 in the actuarial department. He was named actuarial assistant in 1981 and in 1985 was promoted to assistant actuary.
Schreier was appointed an assistant vice president in 1988 and associate actuary in August 1990. In 1994, he was named actuary.
In 2000, he was appointed vice president, chief actuary and actuarial and accounting division manager. He was named executive vice president/finance and treasurer in 2008.
Schreier became a Woodmen of the World member in 1977 and joined Lodge 1 in Omaha. He has held all lodge offices, including president in 1982. In addition, he holds membership in Lodge 16 of Omaha where he has served as trustee.
Schreier graduated magna cum laude from Doane College in Crete, Neb. with a bachelor of arts degree with majors in math and business. He completed the education and examination requirements to receive Membership in the American Academy of Actuaries in 1982 and Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries in 1985.
chreier has been active in the NFCA Actuaries Section since the early 1980s, holding all officer chairs and serving as president in 1989. He has been a member of the Nebraska Actuaries Club since the late 1970s and served as president from 2005 to 2006. He is a volunteer in the Boy Scouts and has helped coach basketball and baseball for St. Bernadette Catholic Church and the South Omaha Pee Wees.
In his free time, Schreier enjoys outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, golfing and walking. He and his wife, Diana, have two sons, John and Michael.
