musicianship with a virtuoso technique," by the Moscow Musical Gazette,
Haselböck brings to Luther a repertoire that ranges from Bach to
Liszt to contemporary composers. The performance is sponsored in part by the Kathryn Ulvilden Moen endowment,
and is part of the 25th anniversary celebration for the CFL's Robert Sipe
organ, given by Luther alumna Jeanne Preus Rost. This isn't Haselböck's first time in northeast Iowa. In 1977, at
age 21, Haselböck taught at Luther when college organist William
Kuhlman was on sabbatical leave. He also graced the CFL stage as conductor
of the Vienna Academy Orchestra when it appeared in a recent Luther Center
Stage Series performance. Haselböck has studied the harpsichord, organ composition and conducting
in Vienna and Paris. A winner of numerous organ prizes and competition,
he then embarked on an international solo career. A frequently recorded artist, Haselböck has made more than 60 solo
CDs. Many important composers have written for him as well, including
Ernst Krenek who dedicated both of his organ concertos to him. Since 1985, Haselböck has been music director of the Wiener Akademie
Orchestra. Since that time, the period-instrument orchestra has had a
regular series of Viennese classical music concerts and performs frequently
in Japan, Paris, Madrid, Cologne, Milan, Moscow and the United States. As conductor of the Wiener Akademie, Haselböck has recorded more
than 40 CDs including works by Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Schubert. His latest
recordings include a "Musical Imperialist" series-10 CDs commemorating
500 years of Vienna Court music. Haselböck's recording awards include the Liszt Award in 1986, the
Diapason d'Or and the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis. In 1997, he was awarded
the highest Austrian Cultural Award by the State President. At home with period- and modern-instrument orchestras, Haselböck
is frequently invited to guest conduct orchestras in Berlin, Leipzig,
Zurich, Budapest, Prague, Brussels and Newcastle, among others. His longstanding
relationship with the Vienna Symphony led to a series of oratorio performances
including all the major Bach Choir-Orchestra Works. While on campus, Haselböck will hold a masterclass with Luther students
on Saturday, March 8, 10:30 a.m., in the Sundt Organ Room in Luther's
Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Future Center Stage Series 2002-03 performances will include: London City Opera's performance of "Madame Butterfly," March 11; Gershwin's "Crazy for You," April 1; and Quartetto Gelato, April 25.
