Editors Refsal and Faldet seek true stories for news 'Healing Art of Craft' anthology

Luther College faculty members Harley Refsal and Rachel Faldet are seeking true, first-hand accounts of how involvement in handcraft -- woodworking, quilting, basketry, jewelry making, painting - served to sustain through a difficult period or circumstance in one's life.

The personal accounts will be the basis for "The Healing Art of Craft," an anthology of essays, poetry and journal entries. The book will be introduced and edited by Refsal and Faldet.

"In more than 20 years of teaching carving courses at various art centers," Refsal states, "I have heard countless inspiring stories and testimonials about the importance of crafts in peoples' lives.

"Handcraft offers relaxation, stimulation, satisfaction," he said. "Traditional crafts provide low-tech, high-touch activities that invite creativity -- vital but rare commodities these days."

Refsal, a staff member at Luther College since 1972, teaches Norwegian language and Scandinavian folk art. He is an active woodcarver, a teacher of figure carving throughout the United States and Scandinavia and the author of two books and numerous articles on woodcarving. In 1996 he was decorated by the King and government of Norway for his contributions to Norwegian folk art.

Faldet, a member of the English department, edited "Our Stories of Miscarriage: Healing with Words." The book was featured on NBC's "Today" show. Faldet is also a quilter.

Persons interested in submitting a piece to be considered for the anthology can send it to Harley Refsal, Luther College, 700 College Drive, Decorah, IA 52101. Submissions are due Sept. 1, 2002, and should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
