Contact: Joe Knobbe, Director of Public Information, 563/387-1865 Feb. 27, 2003 'Seen but Rarely Heard: Voices of Adolescent Girls' exhibit on display
The exhibit was born out of Pastor Gentry's 10-year experience of working with young women. As society becomes more and more complex, today's youngsters are having an increasingly difficult time navigating their way through the perils of adolescence. A young woman's experience is further complicated by the unrealistic demands of the media. Hence, Gentry, a visual artist, dancer, musician, actress as well as an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, seeks to bring young women's issues to light through this art exhibit. The show features painted, life-sized, free-standing wooden cut-outs of actual adolescent girls from around the country who have been interviewed by Gentry. On one side is a painted portrait of the young woman and the other is a collection of the girl's own words. The life-size scale of these pieces is one of the more prominent aspects of this exhibit. Gentry's hope is that the viewers will understand that there "is so much more going on in girls' minds than meets the eye. They deal with a number of difficult issues, and many are incredibly resilient. I've been impressed with the poise and maturity of the women in these interviews, and that is exciting." Gentry is the pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lansing and Waterville Church in Waterville. She received her bachelor's of arts degree in art, theatre and dance from Luther in 1992. Gentry holds a master's of art in the area of worship and the arts and a master's of divinity degree from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California.
