The first, for $5,000 over a three-year period, written by Britt Rhodes provides for faculty development and will involve infusing content on aging into social work courses, connecting seniors in the community to the social work program and classes, and involving students in aging-related projects.
The second grant, for $7,500 over two years, written by Lee Zook will involve students doing oral histories focusing on human development with local seniors as well as pairing policy students with elders in the community to work together lobbying legislators and attending the annual legislative day in Des Moines at the State Capitol.
Jon Christy, director of assessment and institutional research, together with Michael Nolan, associate dean, and Tim Schermer, director of institutional research at Augustana College-Rock Island, gave a presentation titled, “Value-Added Assessment of Student Learning: A Multi-Institutional Approach,” at the Higher Education Data Sharing (HEDS) Consortium Annual Conference in Denver, Colo., June 21-24.

Emergency preparedness tip
Take a moment to imagine that there is an emergency, like a fire in your home, and you need to leave quickly. What are the best escape routes from your home? Find at least two ways out of each room. Now, write it down — you’ve got the beginning of a plan.
This tip is one of 30 from the Department of Human Services. We’ll review them this summer. Full article at: http://www.dhs.gov/xcitizens/editorial_0711.shtm
Wellness tip of the week
How much water should I drink each day? 64 ounces is not necessarily the correct answer. Why would a person weighing 300 pounds drink the same amount of water as someone weighing 150 pounds? The best rule to use for water intake is to take your body weight and divide it by 3. This number would reflect the number of ounces of water you should try to drink in one day. If you are a regular exercisers, live in a dry environment, and/or are stressed out you should increase this amount.
And finally…
You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.
-Erma Bombeck
Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you’ll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin’ to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!
-William Wallace (Mel Gibson) in Braveheart
