Thank you
It happens again (and again and again…) as winter storms blow through Iowa. Driveways are blocked, streets clogged and sidewalks an adventure, yet the campus high-ways and by-ways are quickly open, maneuverable and impressively clear. In the wee hours of the morning the efficient facilities crews are chasing the frisky, mischievous snow trolls back to their bridges and cave retreats, so once again campus dwellers, worker bees and guests can trod the green (buried under 18 inches of snow) with comfort and safety. Many thanks for a job more than well done.
-An aged balding troll
Thank you to all of the wonderful people that came to the rescue of the Book Shop and Admissions and helped clean up the aftermath of the pipe bursting on the second floor of the Union. Due to everyone’s quick response, damage was kept to a minimum. Mange takk.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Austrian born composer Ignaz Pleyel, Musikverlag Doblinger has issued the “1791 Piano Trios,” edited and prefaced with critical commentary by John and Virginia Strauss. The scores and parts, published in the Diletto Musicale series as DM1405-07, were computer engraved by V. Strauss.
The January/February 2008 issue of “American Record Guide” includes a review of J. Strauss’ recent Centaur CD. “Strauss has prepared the literate notes accompanying this recording and is obviously molto simpatico with the music at hand. Kinderszenen is given a gentle reading that emphasizes the scale of the individual pieces-and charms completely… (Strauss is given) full honors, and his inflections, particularly in the slower pieces, are sensitive and tasteful.”
On Feb. 8, pianist and music faculty member Miko Kominami performed live on KSUI Iowa Public Radio’s program “Know the Score.” The program is broadcast statewide on the Iowa Public Radio classical network. Kominami performed two works by Iowa composer Jerry Owen.
Spencer Martin’s article about contemporary German violist and pedagogue, Barbara Westphal, appears in the fall issue of the “Journal of the American Viola Society.” This article was the result of Spencer’s work with Westphal in Germany during summer 2006 that was made possible by a grant from the Lutheran Church of Germany (EKD) and the Doris and Ragnvald Ylvisaker Endowment for Faculty Growth.
Karla Suomala recently attended the Shalom Hartman Theology Conference in Jerusalem, Jan. 20-24. This annual Jewish-Christian-Muslim dialogue focused on familial relationships and law in each of the traditions. As part of the conference, Suomala served as moderator at a forum open to the public that highlighted panelists from Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions.
Luther faculty members Karen Kanakis and Jacob Lassetter performed the roles of Ingram and Delling in the new oratorio “The Puzzlemaster” by Eric Chasalow. The performance was part of a composition workshop at Grinnel College Feb. 16. The libretto for the work was written by F.D. Reeve, Christopher Reeve’s father. Both the librettist and the composer attended the performance.
Congratulations to Marian Kaehler and Kristin Swanson, recipients of Anderson Faculty Sabbatical Awards. These awards, funded by an endowment established for this purpose by H. George Anderson and Jutta F. Anderson, are intended to “encourage creative, scholarly work which significantly deepens the faculty member’s understanding of a field in which he or she teaches regularly.”
